Project Description:

1. Hutchison Group Program in Translational Medicine

More than 300 million people are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus, and millions more are infected with other forms of hepatitis. Hepatitis is the most common cause of liver cancer. Currently, vaccines exist only for some forms of hepatitis, and most available treatments are not universally effective. Mr. Li and the Hutchison Whampoa Group teamed with Stanford University, a leader in the biomedical field, to establish the Hutchison Group Program in Translational Medicine aimed at developing therapeutic approaches that can be rapidly evaluated and applied in clinical trials.

Six project groups were established within the program:
1. Hepatitis C viral RNA genome as a specific drug target to block viral genome expression
2. Identification of peptides that inhibit human infection by hepatitis C and hepatitis A viruses
3. Gene therapy for Hepatitis C infection
4. Genomic analysis of HCV infection using DNA microarrays
5. Class I and Class II restricted T-cell responses in HBV and HCV
6. Viral hepatitis patient database for clinical and basic research

2. Li Ka Shing Professorship in Cardiology

In support of Stanford University’s School of Medicine, particularly the field of Cardiology, the Foundation made a contribution to create a new endowed Chair in Cardiology in perpetuity. The first Chairholder nominated by Stanford University was Professor Alan Yeung, Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine (Clinical) at the Stanford University Medical Center, a prominent clinician and investigator in interventional cardiology who has been at the forefront of his chosen field for many years.

The Foundation has established a number of endowed Chairs at renowned universities such as Cambridge University, University of Calgary, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and The National University of Singapore to support excellence in teaching and research.
