Mainland China's urban living environment has improved dramatically as a result of the country's rapid development over the past 20 years. Unfortunately, conditions in some rural and remote regions have failed to keep pace.

Proposed by Li Ka-shing in May 1998, the Medical Relief for the Poor Program is carried out by medical professionals from the Shantou University Medical College and its five affiliated hospitals to help patients in the remote countryside.

From the project's inception in September 1998, the medical team led by Professor Sun Delin has traveled to the poorest areas of the country in an effort to deliver medical care and much needed medicine to patients and their families. In just four short years, this widely recognized program has offered its services in areas such as Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Yunnan, and Tibet.

Assistance offered by this program comes in many forms. There are general/specialty medical teams, surgical teams, health information teams, ophthalmic surgical teams, basic medical unit aid programs, personal-aid programs, emergency-aid programs, paraplegia-aid programs, and summer outreach programs for medical students of Shantou and Hong Kong. Through these programs, the medical college and hospitals can most effectively demonstrate their full capacity in helping people in poor, remote regions.

As of May 2008, over 984 medical teams had been dispatched to work in impoverished areas, providing free medical core and medicine for more than 390,000 patients. Over 10,000 patients have received free operations, which include over 2,400 cataract operations and over 1,300 cleft-lip and cleft-palate operations. Over $10 million worth of free medication has been dispensed.

The Program also holds summer sessions during summer vacation to provide medical students with valuable work experience. Now, medical relief for the poor is one of the College's most important charitable activities, through which international and national medical workers can demonstrate their love and concern for the poor.

Significance:
- Provide proper medical care for patients in remote regions
- Offer opportunity for medical students to gain first-hand experience under the guidance of seasoned medical professionals and to develop their sense of ethical responsibility
- Besides directly benefiting patients in need, the Foundation hopes the program can help raise the public's awareness and encourage wider support for this worthwhile cause
