Implementation: 2007

Project Description:

In 1980, the Li Ka Shing Foundation formed a partnership with the China Disabled Persons’ Federation to provide services for people who are disabled in mainland China. This collaboration has enabled more than one million cataract patients to regain their eyesight; offered 70,000 prosthetics for amputees; and provided medical, education, and rehabilitation services for more than 10 million people who are disabled.

The Cheung Kong New Milestone Program is a major collaboration between the Li Ka Shing Foundation and the China Disabled Persons’ Federation to provide assistance to the underprivileged. The projects are aimed at helping the impoverished and disabled to build a new life and to raise public awareness of their plight.

Between 2000 and 2005, the program provided artificial limbs for amputees, training for teachers of hearing-impaired children, schooling for blind children, services for the disabled in impoverished areas, and training for blind masseurs. The Program has been successful in raising public awareness of those who are disabled and has secured a total of RMB 1.44 billion (US$200 million) in matching funding support. The project management of the Cheung Kong New Milestone Program has also been widely recognized as a model of quality management by the State Council.

In April 2007, the China Disabled Persons' Federation announced a donation of over HK$100 million (US$12.8 million) from the Li Ka Shing Foundation and the Cheung Kong Group of Companies in further support of the New Cheung Kong Milestone Program. This donation will help provide prosthetics for 100,000 amputees, offer technology training for those who are disabled, and improve rehabilitation services for children with cerebral palsy.
