| The Reasons for the Establishment of Shantou University: |
|
The
Chaoshan district is located in the northern part of Guangdong Province
with a population of about 10 million and limited abundant land
the opportunity to create industry is limited. Determined to contribute
to the development of his hometown, Li Ka-shing realized that cultivating
capable and talented people are the key to creating and sustaining
cultural and economic development in this area of limited industry
and abundance.
Li Ka-shing understands that universities cultivate
enlightened and creative thinking. An education broadens one's vision,
instills ethical and moral values, and promotes scientific and technical
knowledge. With this goal in mind, Mr. Li founded an institute of
higher learning to prepare young people to meet today's multi-faceted
challenges. After graduation, these bright minds can now easily join
the workforce and become pillars of society, contributing to the growth and
prosperity of the region. |
| Introduction and Significance of the Project: |
| 1. Shantou University |
Shantou University was established, after being approved by the State
Council, in 1981, and began to enroll undergraduate students in
1983. The University is located in the northern part of the special
economic zone of Shantou, a seaside city with beautiful scenery.
Shantou University covers an area of 1.26 square kilometers with
a total floor space of 455,500 square meters. Since its founding,
Shantou University has received support from various levels of
government, ranging from the Central Committee to Guangdong Province
and Shantou city, and has obtained generous financial aid from
Mr. Li (more than HK$3.1 billion or US$359 million to date).
After more than 20 years development, Shantou University has grown
into a comprehensive university with many majors and specialties.
The University includes the:
• College of Liberal Arts,
• College of Science
• College of Engineering
• Medical College
• Law School
• Business School (Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business)
• Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communications
• Cheung Kong Institute of Design
• School of Continuing Education.
Shantou University has established seven postgraduate programs and
forty-nine graduate programs. Shantou University now boasts 15,000
students (including full-time and continuing education students),
and more than 700 faculty members. More than 30,000 students have
graduated from Shantou University.
Shantou University devotes great attention to academic development
and scientific research, and its research capabilities have steadily
increased. The University possesses world-class academic and research
facilities. The library, as the center of knowledge and information,
has a collection of approximately one million volumes, and is completely
computerized. Broadband access is available in the student dormitories,
enabling students to directly access electronic resources.
The University has five affiliated hospitals, with a total of 1,800
in-patient beds. The Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) also
has two associated hospitals. With 1,200 beds, Yuebei People’s Hospital
in Shaoguan became one of the associated hospitals of SUMC in 2004.
In 2006, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital also became an associated
hospital of SUMC, named the “Associated Southern China Hospital of
Shantou University Medical College.” The hospital is one of the largest
hospitals in southern China and has 2,000 beds. It was also named
by the citizens of Hong Kong as the most reliable hospital in Mainland
China.
In July 2003, Shantou University successfully passed the expert inspection
of the "Project 211." Shantou University is now actively
making preparations for the second phase of this project as it
continues to follow the evaluation standard issued by the Ministry
of Education. These include plans to strengthen overall academic
development, enhance the postgraduate programs, and upgrade some
graduate programs to doctoral programs in order to achieve national
and international advanced levels. The University is focused on
reinforcing important scientific research projects and technological
training programs; improving the faculty’s ability to organize,
undertake, and accomplish key scientific programs; and developing
local economy and social development services.
Shantou University offers great opportunities for local youth to
receive a higher education, and contributes to the development of
talented and capable people who will further enhance cooperation
between Shantou and the rest of the nation by driving economic development
at local and national levels. Through years of effort, Shantou University
has laid a solid foundation for encouraging continuous development
and for creating a good academic atmosphere to cultivate a new generation
of talented young men and women.
In 2005, Shantou University became the first mainland university to
receive the integral accreditation of ISO 9001:2000 resources management
and ISO14001 environment management system. Shantou University continues
to pursue its goal of building the University into a modern institute
of higher learning with its own distinctive features. |
