The University has five affiliated hospitals, with a total of 1,800 in-patient beds. The Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) also has two associated hospitals. With 1,200 beds, Yuebei People’s Hospital in Shaoguan became one of the associated hospitals of SUMC in 2004. In 2006, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital also became an associated hospital of SUMC, named the “Associated Southern China Hospital of Shantou University Medical College.” The hospital is one of the largest hospitals in southern China and has 2,000 beds. It was also named by the citizens of Hong Kong as the most reliable hospital in Mainland China.

In July 2003, Shantou University successfully passed the expert inspection of the "Project 211." Shantou University is now actively making preparations for the second phase of this project as it continues to follow the evaluation standard issued by the Ministry of Education. These include plans to strengthen overall academic development, enhance the postgraduate programs, and upgrade some graduate programs to doctoral programs in order to achieve national and international advanced levels. The University is focused on reinforcing important scientific research projects and technological training programs; improving the faculty’s ability to organize, undertake, and accomplish key scientific programs; and developing local economy and social development services.

Shantou University offers great opportunities for local youth to receive a higher education, and contributes to the development of talented and capable people who will further enhance cooperation between Shantou and the rest of the nation by driving economic development at local and national levels. Through years of effort, Shantou University has laid a solid foundation for encouraging continuous development and for creating a good academic atmosphere to cultivate a new generation of talented young men and women.

In 2005, Shantou University became the first mainland university to receive the integral accreditation of ISO 9001:2000 resources management and ISO14001 environment management system. Shantou University continues to pursue its goal of building the University into a modern institute of higher learning with its own distinctive features.
