Established in: January 2000

The Singapore Management University has the distinction of being the Republic's first private university funded by the Government of Singapore. Currently occupying the historic Bukit Timah campus, SMU will set up a permanent campus in Bras Basah to be completed in 2005. Modeled after the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, SMU has developed a world-class curriculum offering undergraduate and graduate programmes in the Schools of Business, Accountancy, and Economics and Social Sciences. SMU has also established close links with universities in the Asia Pacific region, particularly those in mainland China.

Project Description:
The S$19.5 million(US$14.3 million) donation is the largest contribution ever received by a tertiary institution in Singapore at the time, and comprises two parts:
The Li Ka Shing and Hutchison Whampoa Library Fund will be used to support the development of SMU's main library, a modern 5-storey structure with advanced facilities such as multimedia labs and virtual interactive terminals. The SMU Library, scheduled for completion in 2005, will form the heart of the new Bras Basah campus and will be named "Li Ka Shing Library" in recognition of Mr. Li's generosity.
The Li Ka Shing Endowed Scholarship Programme offers financial support covering tuition, accommodation, transportation, books and general living expenses for outstanding students from the Asian region, particularly those from Hong Kong and mainland China. Three scholarships will be awarded beginning in 2003, building up to eight full scholarships in perpetuity.

Significance:
Support the continuing development of SMU's academic and research programmes
The scholarships will help to promote education links between Singapore, Hong Kong, and Mainland China, and to groom a new generation of business leaders.
