From 1994 to 1999, the Foundation has made contributions to help build and repair 70 primary schools in the poor, rural areas of Chaozhou. The Foundation’s goal is to provide a firm foundation for basic education in Chaozhou. These primary schools cover an area of 476.8 acres, with a total floor area of 49,558 sq. m. With 523 classrooms, the schools can accommodate 21,540 students. Nearly 15,000 students are enrolled.
Because of limited resources in rural areas, constructing school
buildings and facilities only satisfies a portion of the tangible
needs. Many of the schools experience financial difficulty and
local teachers often have to subsidize the students' tuition. Recognizing
these difficulties, the Foundation established a fund in September
1999 that not only maintains the condition of the schools, but
also provides special scholarships to reward outstanding schools,
principals, teachers, and students. In addition, 1,500 under-privileged
students are financed through school every year.
