Project Description:

Li Ka-shing is strongly committed to Hong Kong, and has long supported the development of local universities. The University of Hong Kong (HKU), which shares Mr. Li’s mission and dedication to the pursuit of excellence, has a venerable history and plays an important role in educating our future generations. Mr. Li hopes that his support for the University would make possible the realization of their transformative initiatives in both academic research and medical services of the medical school. Mr. Li also hopes that this gift would have an added dimension of engineering the development of a meaningful and fruitful core competence for Hong Kong, advancing the frontiers of science, and bringing forth new economic opportunities.

The Council has resolved unanimously to invite Mr. Li to accept the naming of the Faculty of Medicine as the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. The naming is unprecedented for HKU, representing a new milestone in the spirit of public-private partnership, taking HK’s higher education to a new plane of development and enhancing its leading position in Asia.

The University of Hong Kong is Hong Kong’s oldest and most prestigious institution of higher education, attracting outstanding students and faculty from all over the world.

Significance:
Mr. Li believes that knowledge reshapes destiny and he is deeply committed to the development of education and healthcare in Hong Kong. The donation represents an investment in the future of Hong Kong.
The donation is the largest single gift in Asian history, kick-starting a new culture of giving.
The donation will generate matching grants from the government, bringing immediate benefits to current and future students.
Unlike renowned overseas institutions, which can attract global donations, universities in Hong Kong are still reliant on local efforts. With many countries investing primarily in healthcare and technology, it is hoped that the donation will encourage more public and private funding for strategic investments in local education.
The donation marks the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership of excellence between the Foundation and the University. The Foundation’s support of medical research and education programs at three of the world’s top universities in recent years will also serve as a platform for international exchange for our medical students here at home. The mutual achievement will enhance Hong Kong’s core-competitiveness.
The Faculty of Medicine at HKU is committed to the excellence of medical education and research. High quality education and research development projects demand substantial and long-term investment in terms of both talents and resources. The donation is coming at an opportune time , to set a firm foundation for the faculty’s forthcoming grand development plan.
