Li Chong Yuet Ming, the late wife of Li Ka-shing, graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She had often expressed a desire to make a contribution to her alma mater.
To commemorate his late beloved wife, Mr. Li fulfilled her wish by supporting the construction of the university's phase four expansion, which comprises two science buildings and an amenities center. Construction of the project began in 1990 and was completed in December 1994.
Named after Mrs. Li, the Chong Yuet Ming Buildings were designed as twin eight-story towers that house the departments of physics and chemistry, the safety office, four lecture theaters, and research laboratories. Observatory facilities are located on one of the tower's rooftops. The five-story Chong Yuet Ming Amenities Center houses 20 functional rooms, a non-residents hall, video/games rooms, a supermarket, and a restaurant and lounge.
Additionally, there is a fountain named Yuet Ming Fountain, which was named for Mrs. Li by Professor Yiu Chung-yi, one of her former teachers.
