In May 12, 2008, Sichuan suffered China’s worst earthquake in over 30 years, which registered 8 on the Richter scale. The quake killed tens of thousands of residents and caused widespread and massive damage to buildings and schools. The Foundation made a contribution of RMB 30 million to help the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Education with rebuilding efforts. The Cheung Kong and Hutchison Whampoa Groups also donated HK$5 million through the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organizations to aid relief work. A week later, the Foundation announced a second contribution of RMB 100 million (Foundation RMB 40 million, and RMB 30 million each from Cheung Kong and Hutchison) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to provide financial aid for students affected by the earthquake. A third project was later announced to offer free wheelchairs, artificial limbs and prosthetic services for all amputees.
