Project Description:

11. South Asia Tsunami Relief
  In December 2004, an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia registering 9.0 on the Richter scale caused a massive Tsunami that inflicted major damage in a number of South Asian countries. The Foundation and Hutchison Whampoa Limited contributed HK$24 million (US$3.08 million) to provide disaster relief and encouraged the people of Hong Kong to lend a helping hand.
   
12. Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation
  Donation Date: March 2006

Project Description:

The Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation was established in June 2005 to provide funds for medical care to public security officers who suffer work-related injuries or major illnesses.

Significance:

Society thrives on a safe and stable environment. The Foundation hopes this donation of HK$15 million (US$1.92 million) will encourage wider public support for the Guangdong Police Medical Relief Foundation, enabling it to provide proper medical care for police officers.

   
13. Chaozhou Flood Relief
 

In July 2006, a strong typhoon swept across the Chaozhou region, causing massive flooding that left over 1.5 million residents homeless. Mr. Li expressed his concern and has made a donation of $10 million (US$1.28 million) through the Li Ka Shing Foundation to aid relief efforts and to rebuild homes. Both the Foundation and the Hutchison Whampoa Group have also made separate contributions to assist flood victims.

   
14. Snowstorms in Mainland China
 

In January 2008, Mainland China suffered the most severe snowstorms in 50 years, affecting 77 million people and causing an estimated economic loss of RMB 150 billion. In his capacity as Chief Officer of the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organizations, Mr. Li procured a contribution of HK$2 million (US$256,000) from his Group to aid urgent relief efforts.

   
15. Sichuan Earthquake
 

In May 12, 2008, Sichuan suffered China’s worst earthquake in over 30 years, which registered 8 on the Richter scale. The quake killed tens of thousands of residents and caused widespread and massive damage to buildings and schools. The Foundation made a contribution of RMB 30 million to help the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Education with rebuilding efforts. The Cheung Kong and Hutchison Whampoa Groups also donated HK$5 million through the Federation of Hong Kong Guangdong Community Organizations to aid relief work. A week later, the Foundation announced a second contribution of RMB 100 million (Foundation RMB 40 million, and RMB 30 million each from Cheung Kong and Hutchison) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to provide financial aid for students affected by the earthquake. A third project was later announced to offer free wheelchairs, artificial limbs and prosthetic services for all amputees.
