In March 1981, Li Ka-shing was voted Man of the Year, an award presented by Radio Television Hong Kong and Citibank. During the presentation ceremony, Mr. Li announced that he would immediately donate HK$1 million (over US$128,000) to the Asian Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness. The Foundation was founded in February 1981, and its work involves helping Asian countries develop the basic medical technologies to prevent blindness and organizing activities to promote the prevention of blindness.
