The Shanghai Charity Foundation has announced that it has received
a donation of RMB 28.1 million from the Li Ka Shing Foundation and
Hutchison Whampoa Limited to help build the Zhongren Nursing Home
in Jinshan, Shanghai. The nursing home is expected to become operational
in 2003.
Covering an area of 56,943 sq. m., the Zhongren Nursing Home will
have a total floor area of 17,300 sq. m. The two 3-storey buildings
will accommodate a total of 400 beds. The Nursing Home, located
in a tranquil neighborhood, will provide medical and rehabilitation
services for single elderly facing financial hardship; those suffering
from advanced stages of cancer; and those who require constant nursing
and medical care.
The RMB 56.2 million project will be jointly supported by Mr. Li
Ka-shing and the People's Government of Jinshan District of Shanghai.
The Shanghai Charity Foundation, which will be coordinating the
development, says the nursing home will adopt innovative concepts,
providing a high quality environment combined with professional
services. The Foundation is encouraged by this generous donation
from Mr. Li and Hutchison Whampoa. Operating on the principle of
helping the needy, it will also offer financial assistance to those
who are having difficulties.
Mr. Li Ka-shing has long been a keen supporter of elderly services
and hospice care. Mr. Li had previously announced a donation of
RMB 20 million to establish free hospice care services at 20 major
hospitals around the country. Mr. Li expressed his highest regard
for the Shanghai Charity Foundation and commended its efforts in
promoting community welfare. Mr. Li said he was pleased that the
Li Ka Shing Foundation and Hutchison Whampoa were able to participate
in this meaningful and innovative project, and he hopes that once
it becomes operational, the Zhongren Nursing Home can serve as a
role model and help to encourage other agencies to develop an even
higher standard of care for the elderly.
Mr. Li set up the Li Ka Shing Foundation in 1980 to promote the
development of education and medical care in Hong Kong and mainland
China.
