Mr. Li Ka-shing is living proof that Knowledge Reshapes Destiny. "My father died when I was just 12 years old. As the eldest of three, I had to shoulder the responsibility of providing for my family. I had to quit school, but I didn’t give up learning. I couldn’t afford to buy new books, so I bought used books and traded them for other used books."

Decades have passed, and Mr. Li continues to seize every moment to read and to learn. He firmly believes that Knowledge Reshapes Destiny, and wants to disseminate this message throughout society. As part of this effort, the Foundation sponsors reading programs regularly and recommends quality books to the public, including the following:

1) A Brief History of the World

Title: Eine Kurze Weltgeschichte fur Junge Leser
Author: Ernst H. Gombrich

Description:
World history is one of the requisite courses for secondary students in Hong Kong, but few young people find it to be an interesting topic. Gombrich says of his work, "I hope my readers will read these stories in a relaxed manner, without having to take notes or memorize names and dates. I promise I won’t test them on it."

2) How one man invented a color that changed the world

Title: Mauve
Author: Garfield, Simon

Description:
Benjamin Franklin said, "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." The discovery of a synthetic dye by 18-year-old William Perkin in the 19th century is still being written about today. His invention has influenced or revolutionized a number of different industries.

3) When the armor is no longer shiny

Title: The Knight in Rusty Armor
Author: Fisher, Robert

Description:
Everyone has read books that have touched them in a very deep and personal way when they were growing up. This is a story about self-discovery. The knight’s journey of self-discovery reflects our own—filled with hope and despair, belief and disillusionment, laughter and tears. Anyone who has ever struggled with the meaning of life and love will find profound wisdom within these pages.

4) Creative inspiration at work

Title: The Five Faces of Genius:
The skills to master ideas at work
Author: Moser-Wellman, Annette

Description:
What do Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leonardo da Vinci, and Ray Kroc have in common? They all demonstrate the skills of creative genius. Moser-Wellman draws the qualities of creativity from the realms of science, art, as well as business to make up the five distinct "faces": Seer, Observer, Alchemist, Fool, and Sage. Workers at all levels can utilize these creative thinking strategies to flourish in the workplace.
