Our Experiences
Professor Shi Bing graduated from the College of Stomatology, West China University of Medical Sciences. He is currently Vice Dean of West China College of Stomatology, Sichuan University and a member of the expert team of Project New Life. Prof Shi brought out the concept and operation procedures of the repair of unilateral cleft lip with the method of rotation descent step by step (Huaxi technique). He has started to conduct intensive research into the causes and the onset mechanism of cleft lip and palate in a systematical way.
“I got a call from Professor Li Yuguang, representative of the Li Ka Shing Foundation and also member of the core team of Project New Life on a day in early spring 2008. We hadn’t met but I felt his enthusiasm and passion over the phone. We immediately found that we shared a common goal. What would be better than making use of our expertise to extend help to impoverished children suffering from cleft clip and palate? It is a win-win situation for those children who receive care and also the best realisation of self worth for us.
Project New Life has mobilised a large number of medical professionals on an unprecedented scale to work on cleft lip and palate. It has furthered academic research on the subject and aroused discussion. The surge in the number of patients receiving treatment was also obvious. The Project itself has taken root and grown strong to gradually become one of the most influential charitable projects on the treatment of cleft clip and palate in China.
Professor Feng Xinhua, Director of Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery of the College of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University
As a specialist in cleft lip and plate, I started paying special attention to cleft lip and plate patients, a disadvantaged group in society, ever since I was in university. It is my great honour and also a great responsibility for me to have the opportunity to work on something solid for children from impoverished families in the western areas, leveraging this high-level charity platform.
Our hospital is located in North West China where poverty is relatively concentrated within the area. The rollout of Project New Life has brought good news to people here, and it will also bring new life to children here. Their beaming smiles are the best reward for us.
